Re: removeing lower unit on a 1976 johnson
The first thing to do, is open up the motor cover, and locate the shift rod...should be connected to a two blade lever lookin thing. Remove the bolt holding that in place and remove the linkage from the shift rod. Then you can just remove the 5 bolts that hold the lower unit on. There are four around the otuside, and one behind the trim tab. You want to be careful that the unit doesn't fall out, so hang on
