Mercruiser 228 Reliability ????

Hey gang, I have the opportunity to pickup a boat with a Mercruiser 228 which as far as I can tell is the GM 305.

Is this a reliable setup? It seemed to run good and quiet, just don't find much information about it so I'm concerned that it was not a popular model of Merc.

very popular model

GM 305 with a 4 bbl quadrajet carb - tons of em out there

some folks don't like it because it is the same block as the 350 with less horsepower but weighing the same

so you get less power with pretty much the same fuel consumption

other than that it is a very good engine and should last a long time with proper care and maintenance

It was no more, or less, reliable than anything else available at the time (excuding the 470s).

30+ years later - how has it been maintained?
