I have a 1987 mercruiser 5.0 230hp with around 650hrs just lately i have noticed a wierd noise in back of the engine. It isn't a constant knock, more like a random ticking. There is no rythme to the noise it comes and goes, sometimes louder than others ? Anyone have any ideas ?

In the exhaust tube.There is a flapper that keeps water from backing up into the motor.Like an exhaust cover on a diesel engine.It flips up and down making some noise.J

A coupler is bolted to the flywheel and the outdrive shaft goes into it. They will either get chewed up good from engine misalignment or the rubber will melt out from age or no lube.
