don't understand...all of a sudden with the motor running wide open, it wouldn't go into gear?
It shouldn't be running wide open in neutral, and you shouldn't try to shift it into gear at that speed. Something will break.
Have you tried shifting it into gear with it running at idle speed?
Or maybe, try to explain exactly what you are doing, and what's happening with the motor when you do it, and the sequence of events that led up to this condition. In the order in which they happened in.
