You may want to look at reworking the questions to make them more representative of what you are actually asking.

EX. I am both employed and self-employed. I also perform alot of what many would call volunteer or pro-bono work that is actual independent work but I don't get paid. There are others that are within my clientele that have many employees and - in some instances - I may work for them or it may be the other way around based upon investment positions.

The question is more complicated than your poll suggests.

Sorry-
These were just general question's based on the job that you do for the most part.
Are you mainly paid by an employer or a client?
(this does not include volunteering your time)

My primary employment is through the government as an employee.

Secondary pro-bono is business/construction consulting and management.

Tertiary is investment.

I work for others. I'm not real sure of my job title, but I pretty much run an ATV dealership.

Re: Are you self employeed, and do you have employees

Just closed down after 35 yrs in business,
sold the equipment and took a nice corp m-fri job,
decent pay w/ all the benefits.

Now I can actually GO boating.

Gvmnt regs and red tape are making it very difficult to run a small business.
Things will improve after November.
If I were 20 yrs younger I would have waited it out.

I have been a self-employed used car dealer and auto technician for 25 yrs.
Have an equal partner and one part time employee (college student) who does minor repairs and detailing.

Have had two full time employee's when doing customer auto repair which we no longer do.

I work for a small construction company, the owner worries about my paycheck so I don't have to. Well, not much anyway.

We have been as large as 50 people on masonary and carpentry, now we are down to 6. We've been getting by on small jobs for now but will be starting a much larger one next month.

Thanks Phillip, caught the first draft. :)

OH do I know what your saying, WE hope for payment in thirty, but we are lucky to see it in 120 days, there are reasons for overdrafts and credit cards, and the hope that we remember to tuck away all that is spare, if there is any.

I am a Carpenter
I usually work for others.
I am currently unemployed/self-employed. I have two side jobs going right now, a remodel and a roof.
The constuction market here is in the toilet, unless you want to go to Chicago. The 5 hour round trip is hard to justify.

Would I like to run a contracting business? Not on your life.

My wife and I own a flower shop, and we have two employees. Before that, I was a self-employed home inspector for 12 years.

Self-employed? Yes. And it was the best decision of my life, career-wise.

No full-time employees, several sub-contractors and a part time accountant is all I need at the moment.

I develop and maintain business software systems primarily for ports and shipping companies.

retired, self employed, with a 49% partner, (20 y/o) who will inherit the business one day. we do Johnson/Evinrude Outboard service and repair.

"in GOD and CASH we trust" we take the rare check, must know the client well. Cash also makes bookkeepping easier.

Self employed, no employees. Don't need the extra hassle of a staff. Lawn maintenance in the summer, plowing snow in the winter. It's raining today so I have the day off. Being completely dependant on the weather is the only downside. Now I know how a crop farmer feels......

Gave up a very good paying IT job in the "big city". Still much happier now.....

Owned my own business for 20 years with 26 employees. Sold it in 2004 and have not missed it once. Between the union labor and the slip and fall lawyers around every corner it is a wonder I lasted as long as I did.

Retirement I highly recommend it.

I'm a partner in an IT firm. I'm a Veep, manager, project manager, service manager, you name it. I am a people person, but it drains me. I'm a techie at heart, and I _hate_ dealing with staff issues!
