I just got 1978 Mark Twain boat with Volvo Penta AQ140 motor / Volvo 280 outdrive. Was told that cylinder head is rotted out & needs to be replaced. It seems that Volvo engines or parts are hard to find.

Can anyone tell me what other engines are compatible with Volvo 280 outdrive?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. I'm sure a Volvo engine would fit it. I've seen some Mercury, Chevy etc. motors coupled with Volvo outdrives. They are a lot easier to come by so I was hoping I could use one of the more common engines. Do you think that would work?

Volvo didn't use GM 4 cylinder engines prior to 1994, they used marinized Volvo engines. The GM engines are not designed to work with the 270/290 style drives.
There are no accessories that hook up to that type drive.
