Well, like an idiot I didn't have my extra drive pin and sure enough, hit a submerged log chunk or whatever IN THE CHANNEL!
It's only a 101 degrees here and I wasn't looking forward to a mile paddle. I was hoping to use my leatherman to get a screw or nail out of a tree with a yo-yo stick on it to use as a low-speed temporary pin, but that was a no-go. I took the prop off and it was sheared flush, with the middle of the brass pin still in the prop shaft. I slid it out a 3/16 of an inch, reinstalled prop and nut, put it in forward and cranked it in forward and got all the way home at low speed without incident. (1956 10hp johnson)
Gotta get myself a spare pin and tape it to my motor! But when in need, 1/3 of a pin will work sometimes!:)

Ah, the memories. :)

That used to be the standard "get home" method if you had already used the spare pin taped to the inside of the bonnet, JBJ.

Just swap the middle piece with either end piece.

Much better idea to keep a spare pin inside the . . . .um. . . .bonnet just sounds better than cowling. :)

Of course, I thought my method was quite revolutionary. :D
Indeed, the spare pin will be on the docket. At least I had my trusty leatherman tool which my sister-in-law bought me. I have to say that it is far greater quality than the typical junk kind of mult-tool. I love th stainless steel.

I keep a chunk of tongue from an old leather shoe, with slits in it so I can mount extra pins and keep one under the "bonnett" and one in the tool box. I hate robbing nails for drive pins, but I hate paddling even more. Glad you made it back with your arms intact JBJ!
