NORTH OF DETROIT? Go out and catch your own! I was lived in St. Clair Shores for years and NEVER bought crawlers, EVER. Now I live in GA and crawlers sometimes cost $4.50 a doz. which is actually about 9, maybe thats a Canadian doz..

LOL, I usually do, but the past two years rebuilding old tubs have taken a toll
on the yard, the chemicals play H*ll on their environment.

Thats why I mentioned the 'farm'...I used to have a big 'ol tote buried in the back, go out each night or so, grab'em up, toss 'em in the bin, throw some mulch over them, and they were always available.

Minnow's haven't hurt us yet. The place my buddy put's in at{private} has a gathering of them constantly, either we leave out a trap the night before, or a few throws of the net sets us up good for the day.

No I haven't, need to google it or something, heard it spoke of, but not exactly sure what it is. Is it an actual lure or a dip/spray scent attractant?

Leeches have always been tuff little critters that hold up well, but I've been having a hard time finding them on a regular basis :(

Just be thankful you don't fish with blood worms. Most places around here are $10 a dozen.

Give Fishbites a try. They work very well.

lol, we fish Bloodworms. Supposedly low tide at McNear Beach on San Pablo bay is good. Walk out in the mud and turn over rocks. I usually just cough up the $8 at the local shop. Wish those things couldn't pinch though. First time my buddy gve me one without telling me and I jumped a good few feet, lol.

Night crawlers around here go for $2.50 at walmart and $2.99 at the bass shop

$2.29 to $3.39 for crawlers here in VT.

I usually buy "dillies" which are smaller crawlers, cost the same and 15 to a pack. Just as effective and with less of a trailing tail a lot less short strikes.

One way I save money is buying them "direct." There is a local guy who will pick and sell me 100 for $10.

Re: Night-Crawlers...going rate around here is...

When I lived in MI, I had one of those big old Oberlin Bait Canteens, the fiber ones, now they are "vintage" collector items on the auction sites. I could catch a bunch of crawlers whenever we had a good rain and keep them for months in the fridge, just keeping the bedding damp. As you say though, they don't like the chemicals, so I had to catch them where they didn't use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Has anyone had any luck with the GULP baits? I have yet to catch ANYTHING on them, other than tiny bluegills on the maggots. I do have hope for the leeches on walleyes, but haven't tried them yet.

Just looked up that Gulp alive stuff...ain't cheap either...any clues on approximately how many come in the qt container? Looks like it would be a great way to ween off having live bait on hand.

Never seen a bloodworm 1st hand, but I knew about them latching on to you{lol}, like grabbing a leech out of the tub, just hold your hand in long enough and they'll make it easy for you :D

Not sure about Gulp! Alive. It would seem to be visually OK and there are those nationally-known fishermen who I tend to respect (Gary Parsons, Al Lindner, et al) who say it outfishes the real thing. Huh- I guess I am not quite the fisherman that Lindner is, but Gulp! hasn't impressed me yet. BUT with the way things are going, we might best be learnin' now as it seems that the next trend will be "no live bait" for both rec fisheries and tournaments. It's going to benefit Pure Fishing conglomerate and re-grade the tournament fields, but advertising dollars aside, it is being named an improvement over live bait by many TV anglers. Not all of them are dollar-driven to the point of hawking stuff merely cuz they are paid to do it.

My 2 cents as usual.

It's been that way in SW for quite some time. Live bait is looked down upon except when fishing for a couple of species. Most guys I know fish artifical probably 95% of the time.

I never fish with live bait, either- other than trolling crawler harnesses for walleyes, that is. Spoons, plugs, cranks, minnowbaits, spinners. There are still a lot of live bait fisherman in the northeast, however.

Live bait doesn't bother me for crawler harnesses- still hooks them but 99% not deeper than the mouth. What does bother me is the number of baitfishermen I see "throwing back" sub-legal but bleeding fish who are probably going to die 90% of the time.

But I am quite sure I am preaching to the choir.
