1964 Starflite carb question

Hey guys. Im working on a 64 starflite 90hp. Looking through the carb there are tubes that you can see. I believe they are the high speed tubes? The lowest one dumps gas as soon as you pump the fuel bulb up. I thought the float was stuck. I took off the carb bowl and sure enough the float in that bowl was stuck. So I cleaned the bowl and needles and seats made a new gasket. But when I put it back together, same result. Am I missing something? Is there anyway fuel can get into these tubes just by pumping up the fuel bulb?

Thanks in advance

Nope, has to come through the float valve. The float heights are difficult to set without the special tool. That may be your problem. Or, just plain bad float valve.

OR---a plugged bowl vent will do it too. Sorry, I don't remember the vent system details on that carb.

Thanks for the reply. I did check the vent and they are all clear. I set the floats with a ruler, following the service manuals numbers. But I do see that my seloc manual does call for a tool. Ill see if I can find the tool in town and reset the floats.

thanks

Hey rickjames!

I'll be curious to see if the tool changes your float settings much from the "ruler setting", and if it fixes your problem, so post back and let us know.

Also, float needles typically have a little black rubber witch's hat tip. That conical tip seats in the valve when the float is up, shutting off the flow. I'm sure you already know this, but it's worth saying that those rubber tips can wear over time, degrading the seal, and allowing gas to flow even when the needle is fully seated. When they are worn, you can see a dimple in the perfect concial surface. If you can see that, you need new needles. Might be worth checking out. I have to use a magnifying glass to see it with my old eyes. :D

Godd luck, and let us know what you find out.

Re: 1964 Starflite carb question

Hey guys,

Well I set all the floats a full 1/8" under what the specs say to see if that makes a difference..... Nope, was hoping that it was going in through the vent but that doesnt seem to be the problem. Im guessing that one or so of the needles are bad. They dont look bad, but the must be.

Can you guys help me decide, the cheapest kit that I found is $180. Is it worth putting the kit in? I have not had it on the water, it was on a boat that I bought. I also have a 79 75hp evinrude that needs some work that I would feel better spending money on cause its 15 years newer. What would the 1964 90hp starflite be worth if I sold it??

Thanks
