i have a 35hp 1980 johnson motor the engine starts but wont stay running unless i keep hitting the choke took apart the carb a flushed it , still wont stay running could the problem be carb or reed valve

Not the reeds, so forget that theory. So you call yourself cleaning the carburetor, right? Did you clean the high speed jet orifice? It is in the very bottom of the carburetor where it collects all the junk and gum. It must be absolutely, positively squeeky CLEAN. Any dirt of varnish in it whatsoever will cause your problem.

Finally, you did try adjusting the idle needle, right? It may simply be set too lean.

Hitting the choke button, richens up the fuel air mixture. Two common cause's of this are :
#1 dirty carbs. So if you got a kit, changed out and cleaned behind the welch plugs, de gunked up the fixed jet and cleand out the low speed jet. Reset the float replaced the needle, cleaned out the bowl etc,then you cleaned the carb, other wise, try again.
#2 air leak, so if you did all that, then maybe the carb is sucking air in between the carb throat and reed cover plate. that would be a poor or leaking gasket.
