Max HP Rating 13 ft Boston Whaler

Hello Need some Help. I have a 1975 Boston Whaler 13ft Sourpuss Model does anyone have an idea what Max HP it will handle? It currently has a 1980 40 HP Mercury I am looking to upgrade to a johnson 48 160 Lb motor. The tag on the hull is no longer readable Thank you for your assisstance.

dont quote me on this but i do believe 40hp is maxing it out. if you want more power you can get a newer 40hp post 1985? the old motors were measured at the powerhead and not the prop so it probably produces something about 35hp in todays motors which are measured at the prop.
dont put the 48 on it youll be overpowering such a small boat besides a the johnson is probably somewhere in the range of 40hp in todays standards maybe a little more

I agree that 40hp is the max for a Whaler Sport 13 footer. I almost bought one for $700 last fall and I've been kicking myself ever since.

Great little boats. I think a 40 would be plenty of power for one of those hulls.

40 is max. back in the day it was the 33 or 35. I had a 18 on mine and did fine

Thanks for your honestly I was just looking to upgrade to a newer motor But I agree I don't want problems

I have a 1988 13' whaler with a yamah 30 hp. It flies right along with 2 people, but slows down with 5 people towards the 900lb limit. I picked up a 40 hp yamaha wih power tilt for short money and am wondering what the difference in top end speed would do. Anyone with experience have a reply?

Being basically a flat bottom boat, I bet a 40 hp would push it pretty good...30-35 mph would be my guess...

My 40 will push mine as fast as I want to go in it. I had a 50 force on it for one day before. That was too much.........
