My 'puter, mostly my aol.

1. I am getting spam Emails for viagra and related products from my own Email address!! They have an "unsubscribe" icon; when I click that I get the whole pharmaceuticals website. GNASH!! I tried to block them, but aol just ignores me.

2. Even worse. . . much worse. . .porn sites are popping up in my inbox. These seem to be porn sites that I (or other mods) have smitten from iboats.:(

If I can't get rid of these curses I think I will just give up on Email altogether and use the phone (no texting) and iboats PMs.

If I take the 'puter to my conehead do you think he can get it to operate in a civilized manner??

Shouldn't have to take it to someone. What malware/spyware/virus protection/detectors are you using? Sounds like your puter has been compromised...run a few scans and see what show's up. Lot of good free apps out there to assist if you don't have something to use.

Those unsubscribe links... Never click them. They usually dont even put you on a remove list even though they say they do.

Usually I have to explain this to folks when I finish cleaning computers. The common question is how do these companies get your email?

Simple answer.. Companies sell it. Even your ISP sells your Email address. Ever write your email on a comment card for a major chain? Hotel, car company etc?
All it takes is for one marketing company to buy a list with your email and it's over. You will get flooded. Then if that marketing company sells their lists, you will get more..

The best thing you can do is to report these emails as spam. Soon enough you'll catch up to it..
I've even have computers come in that I have done nothing but set up mail rules for people because they get spam. If you use Outlook, outlook express, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird or any other mail client, you can set rules up for when you get a certain subject or key words they can be deleted or moved so you never see them.

One older lady was so relieved once I set up her mail rules that her inbox went from 150+ messages a week to about 5-10 messages.

No, say it isn't so. Who would pick on JB.

My question for JB is, "Where has your computer been?":D

Actually, you'd have to expect that kind of attack from a shunned porn vendor. That's what internet security is for. When you stick your neck out like you have to to moderate a site like this. You have to expect the attack and defend against it.

There are lots of bogus stuff out there that collect email addrs. I've gotten mails that the sender posed as my friends. Anything suspicious get spammed without opening. If you open the message or click on the unsubcribe button, all that does is verified that your addr. is an active one. I've been "training" my aol and yahoo inbox for quite awhile now and they're pretty good at catching junk. Beware of those too good to be true craigslist adds too. The worst thing about this is you don't even have to be infected to get spams. It's your contacts and their contacts and their contacts.

JB...

With all due respect to your rank, dump AOL and get a decent ISP. That will solve most of your problems. And for a lot less expense !!

And with respect to your email, try Thunderbird.... never a nasty email or junk stuff or advertisements or whatever....

Very respectfully,

Re: STUPID SPAM EMAILS!!!

Re: STUPID SPAM EMAILS!!!

I was getting spammed a ton a long time ago so I did a lot of research on how spam is made/created/managed as if I were to want to become a spammer (you can't really know how this stuff really works unless you search like you mean it). So this is what I came up with:

Some advanced email programs simply ask you for a return email address as a way to cloak the true email address it is sent from. They don't even have to have access to your account. This is how people can send spam from Canada, India, or wherever, and still make it look like it came from NASA.gov (for example). You can look this up on youtube and there are even tutorials on how to do this just to prank someone you know. So you can send an email through your true email address (like billy123@blahblahblah.com), but with these email programs, you can tell the program that you want your email address to really appear as something like thelaunchbutton@nasa.gov. So this is how many spammers will make an email appear to be from your email address.

Someone did this to me a while back and spammed a bunch of my friends by using my email address in the "sender's email address" box, even though none of them were sent from our server (our ISP confirmed none of them were sent through our account, so nothing was hacked).

I hope this clarifies how they make the spam appear to come from your own account.

For those times you need to give an email address out (like to get a rebate or something) sign up at spamgourmet.com

It works like this:

You have an account there (free) that is fred@spamgourmet.com. You give the spammer the address spammer.4.fred@gourmet.com.

Spamgourmet forwards the first 4 emails then throws the rest out. Sure, they can sell your address but it doesn't matter - you never get it.

You make up the first word (spammer here) and the number of emails you want.

If I find the site is someone who really should have my address I can always edit it on their site with my real address.

Never ever hit unsubscribe from one of these spam emailers unless its something you had previously signed up for. It just verifies that you are a real email address and likely Will cause even more junk emails.

Just because it says it was from your own email address means nothing. They can put anything in there.

Not to plug MS, but they have a free application "MS essiantials" that I have had for over 6 months on two computers. Very stable and reliable. You can schedule your scans and it gives you a history of deleted and harmful files.

^ ya

And another thing you could do is have a free gmail, hotmail, or yahoo acct. that you don't really care about. NEVER, EVER email anyone you actually know from the free one, just use it for junk. Want to register to some forum, use the junk one. That way, if the forum wants to send you something, or you have to reset a password, you have a real acct. do that with.

Also, most ISP's will allow you to create several aliases. IOW, other accts. on the same domain. Just create another one and use that, being careful how you use it and setting up rules to filter all the undesirable stuff.
