Hi everyone, I have a 1980 Evinrude 9.9hp outboard that worked fine until a few days ago when i pulled the cord to start it and the cord would only recoil about 8 to 10 inches.

I have taken the starter assembly apart and nothing looks broken. the spring is somewhat loose in the first two or three loops from the center.

Also, in looking at an exploded view diagram, my starter did not have a spring retainer on the spring. could this be the problem?

Or is it most likely that the spring is just old and I should get a new one?

Or is it something completely different?

Re: 1980 Evinrude 9.9 pull cord problems

I have had a few of those apart and have yet to find the retainer in any of them. Perhaps they added them at a later date, I just don't know. The retainer doesn't seem to matter in any case as all mine have worked well. What you describe sure sounds like a broken spring. Usually they are due for a good cleaning (varsol) and re greasing and their good to go for a few more years. If you want it to last longer, don't pull the cord right out to the end when starting. I only pull mine 18 to 24 inches at a time. I would also suggest getting a new cord while you have it apart. Best of luck. Rick.
