So we are shopping for a seaworthy Pacific Northwest cruising boat capable of Seattle to Alaska, with stops at various islands, such as the Queen Charlottes. 24' to 27' length.

So the obvious choices seem to be Sea Sport, Osprey, and a few others, but boy, a bit spendy. These certainly seem to be excellent quality boats, but are there other boats that people would suggest where the price point isn't around $50,000?

Thanks for any information!

I see a lot of PCNW guys run Bayliners. The trophy styled boats offer a lot of bad weather protection, and I would assume if there is an abundance of them, they hold up to the conditions fairly well.

I'd say it depends on how many creature conforts you want and how fast you want or need to be able to go (conditions allowing, obviously).

Also especially relevant is going to be your choice of engines and the impact that will have on your cruising range.

IMO, the best boats for that type of trip would be a trawler style with a single diesel, but of course that's a boat designed for range/economy and heavy weather operation, not speed.

WAC fishing boats with dual IO or OB could be another option, but obviously with significantly less as far as below deck comforts.

If you can find a late model Sea Sport or Osprey that size for $50K, I would snap it up quick.

Unless you are willing to spend some big money on fuel doing the inside passage. I boat in the Sound as well, you should be looking at a displacement hull trawler style rig. You would only be doing 7-9 kts, but your economy will be MUCH better than anything you would encounter in a trailerable I/O or outboard planing settup.

The trip would take you much longer, but I kinda think that's the point. There is no shortage of boats that would do this on Craigslist for the Seattle area.

This may be way bigger than what you were looking at, but 150 miles on 40 gallons isnt too shabby. But its 42 ft, could be lived on, and its a fiberglass hull with a diesel and bow thrusters.
