1960 johnson 40. The previous owner had the fuel line running strait from the carb to the tank. I got the motor running and it does great as long as I pump the primer. I dont know wich line goes were on the fuel pump. On the side of the pump there is a lower line and a higher line. I have seen a picture of the motor with a hose that goes from the left side of the engie as you look at it from the rear to the rear of the pump. does anyone know how they go and how I can check to see if the fuel pump works?

Re: 1960 johnson fuel pump question

Normally there is a indication of "in" to the pump and "Out" to the carb, on the fuel pump(cast into the aluminum). The line in the rear is the pulse line to the crankcase, to power the pump.

Also, if you put the fuel line onto the pump and pump the primer, the fuel will not go into the pump, if you have it on the out nipple. it will fill the pump, if you have it on the in nipple.
