I need help trying to identify an older model Mercury 500 50hp Motor. The original area that should have had the serial number stamped on it, is ozidized and with wear from some part rubbing across it, it can't be read. Is their a knowledgable individual out there that knows another way to identify the model and year?

If you go to THIS website you'll be able to identify it by the decals....

OK, That sure narrowed the field. Its a 1970 or 71. Are there actually any differences between those years models?

Very little. They use the same service manual....
