Let me start by stating that I recently replaced the lower unit. The other day it started knocking while I was on plane and full throttle. It was like it was jumping out of gear. When it happens it is like you hit something. Now I have trouble getting on plane without it doing it. I am really not sure where to start, I just finished paying $2800 for a lower unit replacement and really don't want to have to take it back to the marina. Any one have a similar issue or can lead me in the right direction?

God Bless,
Bass Fisherman

Possible it is an adjustment issue. The shift rod in the lower unit must be set to a specific height before it is reinstalled in the midsection. The tolerance is plus or minus 1/32 of an inch according the measurement stated in the factory service manual. If you are off somewhat on this critical measurement, the clutch dog won't engage the gear face properly and it can jump in/out of gear. This slippage is rather violent and will quickly damage the clutch and gear faces.

So basically you are saying that the marina did not set it at the correct height adjustment. Is that correct?
