My 1974 Mercury motor started up for about 20 seconds then cut off. I tried strarting it several times after and it wouldn't start, sounded like a typical motor roaring to start. Then after several tries, came just a click. I turn the ignition and it just sounds like a stalled click. Did I kill the battery or what else could be the problem? If so can these battery be jumped with cables? Is the batter a 12 volt? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

First try to turn the red flywheel by hand, to make sure the motor didn't seize. Then you can jump boat battery, just like a car. Positive on jumper battery to positive on boat batt. Neg to neg.

If starter doesn't spin. you have connection or starter problems. Post back with results.
