I have a 1975 Merc 140hp I/O engine. My engine lost compression in a cylinder. I started trying to find another engine for it. It seems all I can locate around here are 120hp merc I/O's.

Is it a direct swap for the 120? Would I notice a whole lot of difference? I am more using my boat for fishing, and not for tube pulling or skiing.

i just would like to know how practical it would be to use a 120hp in place of my 140. Also does everthing swap over between the two?

Then maybe I can rebuild my 140 if it's able to be.

Thank you.

I have been in a boat - 18' Fiberglass Sportcraft bowrider - that originally had a 3 liter 140, and a 120 was installed in its place. HATED it. There was a huge difference between the two. I know it is only 20hp on paper, but the difference in performance was amazingly bad. I would suggest you keep looking for a 3 liter. It can't be that hard to find.

my dad had a 120hp in his boat and we had to swim behind the boat and push it! no such thing as getting up on a plane... it was a 21' boat, but i was surprized how bad it was.... i would't go down... i would see if you can go up...150? 175?... have to see what your boat is rated for. my boat has 190hp but i know someone who has the same boat with a 140hp in it... so i know there is a wide range of what these boats can handle...
