If you had to use a rope to hold the shifter in gear I would think that you might have a clutch dog and forward gear problem. The lower unit will have to come of and be disassembled for inspection.
Have you checked the lower unit oil for any metal particles?

Clutch dog, forward gear, and shift linkage. It all goes together, and fixing one without at least checking the rest is folly. Cost varies from moderatly expensive to very expensive, depending.
