Hey Guys

The past couple of trips to the lake I've run into a problem with the outdrive.

I've got a 1987 Sea Sprite with the OMC 3.0 liter and Cobra
outdrive.

After the engine is warmed up and I've been tooling around a while (about
an hour), I'll go to throttle up and the engine comes to life
and and boats starts to take off, but only to have the drive/engine "slip", like a car's transmission slipping out of gear.

I bring the throttle back and then re-do the manuever, same thing- as the
engine RPM's pick up and the boat starts to take off, it seemingly slips out of gear and the RPM's go thru the roof until I bring the throttle back to neutral.

Only way to get it back to the dock is to engage forward but slightly above idle so as to make a little headway.

So I'm thinking it's more complicated than a linkage issue....my usual
bad luck dictates it be something more sinister....

If anyone can relate to the issue or give me some ideas on a fix, I'd be forever grateful.

Thanks
Mike

Possibly a spun prop hub.

Guys

Thanks for the ideas - would the two issues you wrote about (spun prop
or engine coupler) be intermittent issues?

I ask cause this seems to be just that, intermittent and not all the time.

I apprecaite your feedback!!

Thanks
Mike

I think if you pull the prop you'll find the prop is spinning.

Gentlemen

So far we've got a couple of replies about a possible spun prop (Dear God, despite all the ill I've caused my two ex wives, please let it be that!!)

If that is the case, would/could it have been an intermittend issue as it
did this a couple of years ago (only to get better)? I only ask because I would imagine that the spun prop would be toast once it started
spinning and never regain a bite.

However, in my instance as outlined orginally, it would start working again
until the next time it did its thing.

I'm hoping it could very well be this and do have a spare prop I'll
throw on there, but if anyone can let me know if it was the prop that
it would be an all or nothing proposition, or could very well be an intermittent
issue.

Again, thanks to everyone who's responded!!

Re: 3.0 liter omc cobra "slips"

Lets see, The prop hub is a Rubber bushing pressed into a steel prop it has the splined reciever to attach to the prop shaft. Exhaust (hot) gases exit through the prop and very well could help release the grip of the rubber bushing in the steel prop.
Once cooled down it may re attach itself for a while until it gets hot again. So yes it could present as an intermittent problem. IMHO

Allrighty....thanks for everyone's input.

I'll go cheap and pray it's the prop stripping
out.

If not that, I may have to part company with the old
marine money pit.....

I sincerely appreciate all the insight, leads, and links folks
sent.

Best Regards to all here!
