Newbee question on engine mounting

I inherited a 17' fiberglass boat. It has a 4 cyl volvo engine and outdrive. The transom was rotten, and I have just replaced it. I was surprised when I removed the engine to find that it was not mounted to the floor, it was literally hung off the transom. I thought there would have been mounts between the engine and the floor to support it, as it is not a light engine. I am new to boats, and this one does not have any data plate on it..just decals with Traveller and Saturn on it. It is an old boat..maybe mid 60's. Is this typical of how they mounted the engines for this type of boat?

Very typical. In fact, you will have a very difficult time finding any 4 cylinder Volvo mounted any other way.
