'87 Merc controls-what years can I use on?

Hi there,

I have sort of a good problem. I've been given a 14' boat with a 1987 Merc Classic 50 (45hp). Problem is, the engine is done. I'm wondering to what year of outboard my 1987 controls will work on (no power trim). I have found a possible replacement engine (50hp) with no controls and wondering if they will work. Or if anyone can lead me to that info.

Thanks!

I believe that in 1980 Mercury went to the current wire connector for the engine and control harness. In case you don't know the color scheme of the one's that should fit it. Here are some pictures

The mechanical controls will work on most Mercs of a wide vintage. For example, I am using my '77 MerControl on my '93 Merc. The wiring may require grafting to adape it.

Sorry, the new engine is a 1997 50 4S.
