Hi I'm new to this forum and have a limited mechanical knowledge when it comes to diagnosing fuel problems. I have a 2002 Johnson 150 outboard I purchased about 4 months ago. The problem I noticed when I first placed her in the water was it idled rough and kept stalling when I put it in gear. There is a small bright red lever with a schrader valve located right above the primer solenoid which I rotated with my finger at a 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position. Neither positions kept the motor running except when I position the red valve at the 4 o'clock position. At that point, the RPM went up and I was able to maintain in gear and reach WOT. However, the motor still idled rough at low RPM but stayed running.

So I decided to replace the old spark plugs with new ones, replaced old gas with new 93 octane and added sea foam treatment. I took it out for a run and noticed same motor sneezing, stalling and rough idling. So this time, I purchased an OEM manual and decided to follow the instructions to rebuild the carburetor with some help from the " top secret file". The only thing I did not touch was the low speed adjustment, which leads me to believe that I need to adjust them or a problem in my primer solenoid or a problem in the vapor pump diaphragm. (I think)

With all six carburetors having thoroughly cleaned and replaced with new gaskets, floats, needles and everything that came with the rebuilding kit. Everything that needed cleaning was cleaned with carburetor cleaner and compressed air. In addition, I replaced the fuel filter and tightened fuel line hoses and hooked up my garden hose and she started right up. I thought my problem is solved, but I was wrong.

So i took her in the water and had a hard time starting it. I restricted the air flow to the carburetor intake hole and she seems to run a little longer then stalls. There was fuel coming out of the carburetor intake when I place my hand to restrict the intake. At this point I had enough and called it the day.

Anyone with information as how I can solve this problem is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Tony
