went to start boat and starter turned over fine then made a bad grinding noise. when I checked the engine I found that the starter bendix cover was cracked in half? what might have caused this, could engine be siezed?

Take the plugs out and try to rotate the flywheel by hand. Starter may well have just given out.

Welcome to iboats

Can you turn the flywheel by hand? They the motor is not seized.

The bendix is often neglected and will break if it is not properly lubricated (they all require a small amount of oil/grease on the shaft) and check all the starter mounting bolts. If bolts are missing or not tight it will cause mis-alignment.

I just replaced the starter in my V-4 for about $100

I did turn the prop in foward gear and it moved so it is not siezed. I just don't understand how it could of broke through the flywheel shroud with such force? I have to replace that whole cover as well. I don't pretend to be a marine mechanic by any means but am not afraid to try stuff. I should be able to replace the starter with out removing the flywheel right?
