How do surveyers check boat transoms?

One of the risks of used boats (since the boat makers are slow to quit with wood) is rotted transoms.
How is that usually checked?
- look at the top of the transom for delamination /holes/ etc- that seems obvious, but what other methods are used to check- say on a 19 ft outboard type boat?

Just a guess, but probably tap with a hammer. If there is rotten wood inside, you'll hear the difference as you tap on different areas.

Most surveyers will use a moisture meter to begin with, then pull out the rubber/plastic hammer and sound out those areas for delamination/rot
solid area's a THUD,
delaminated/rotted area's TUD.
