Lower Unit

Hi Everyone,

I have a question that I need some opinions on. In Jun I took my 1991 Evindrude 175 Intruder outboard to a local dealer to have the lower unit repaired. The work done was, replaced all seals, replace prop shaft, installed a new water pump and replaced prop. This weekend was the first time I had the motor in the water and the motor ran great. Just as I was getting ready to take the boat out of the water I noticed a noise that sounded like it was between gears. It went in and out of gear fine but I quickly shut it off and brought it home. In all I probably ran the boat 3 hours after the repair stated above. When I got the boat home I lowered the motor and gear grease started running out of the exhaust just like it did before I had the seals replaced. To make matters worse when I pulled the bottom plug out of the lower housing CHUNKS of metal fell into the pan! So it appears there is some gear damage. I am pulling it back to the dealer tomorrow to take up the repair issue with him and would like to get some input from you that are way more knowledgeable than I am on if you think something the mechanic that worked on my boat may have done not right to cause this problem. I certainly don't want to falsely blame anyone but also don't want to soak up a bill IF there is a chance that the previous repair was not done correctly. It just seems odd to me that I have these serious problems the first time I put the boat into the water! I would hope that since the mechanic had the lower end apart that he would have inspected all the parts and replaced anything that appeared bad. Any input would be appreciated so I have a little knowledge when I get to the dealer.

Thanks all, have a great night

Re: Lower Unit

Hard to comment on without knowing the damage. Will have to pull it apart to determine what went wrong then go from there.

Re: Lower Unit

Any reputable mechanic should stand behind his work. His motto should be "If you are happy, tell others. If you are not happy, tell me (him)" I hope that isn't a copyrighted motto. I've heard it before.

"The work done was, replaced all seals, replace prop shaft, installed a new water pump and replaced prop."

If they did all that work, they would have had to disassemble the lower unit.

3 hrs. run time before breakdown is inexcusable in my book.

Remain calm and bring your bill, your boat, and talk only to the business owner.
If he brings in the mechanic, and the mechanic gets upset,,,,,remain calm. Work out a repairable solution with the business owner.

Reputable repair shop should stand behind their work. Depends on what actually "let go" here and what you authorised him to repair / replace.
