I just bought a 1986 century 5000 22" Maiden voyage she immediately overheated. I was assuming it was the water pump (gm 350 engine 5.7L) I tool off the water pump and notices the impeller was spinnning (working I believe) So I put the garden hose in the skinny intake water hoses(pic attached. When I did that water was coming out of where the outdrive pivots. (pic attached)
Problems? How expensive are the parts? DIY

Water is supposed to exit through the relief ports where the drive pivots and you may see some through the prop as well. Your feeding water from where it is supposed to enter the thermostat cover back through the inlet in the lower drive. In that pic. You might try the water muffs which attach to the lower unit intakes with a hose and feed the water up from the bottom. DO NOT RUN MOTOR WITHOUT WATER RUNNING TO IT. Wal- Mart sells the Muffs. If you go back to the How Do i link, scroll down to "How do I change water pump"

I have the muffs... I guess the only way to check impeller is by taking drive apart

You should have some serial numbers on the engine or flame arrestor which will help

Not a problem. I get my parts at the NAPA in Mt.Pocono. They have the marine parts catalog there not online. My last pump kit and impeller was less thn $50.00 and you'll need gear lube and hand pump.
