Just got a 1988 Force 125 that runs, but the prop doesn't turn. Previous owner said it was running and made a snapping/whirring noise and the prop stopped. The motor still ran but the prop no longer worked. I haven't got into it yet, but I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.

Get a manual and dig in. The prop is connected to the propeller shaft, the propeller shaft is connected to the ...... wife just said to keep my day job. Drive train, shifter linkage, ----snap,whirr is kind of fun.

My guess is the driveshaft is broken. You need to drop the lower unit and inspect. The drive shaft will be in 2 pieces if broken. Is there a very noticeable ding in the prop?

I don't want to get a manual just yet, I might not keep the motor. Is there anyone here that could describe how to remove the lower unit? I don't even see any bolts?

Check out the "how to replace the impeller" sticky at the top of this forum. Good instructions on how to drop the LU.
Good luck!

Got it apart, found a broken driveshaft. It broke right under the waterpump. This thing looks to be about 31" - 32" long. (if it were in 1 piece) There are listings for a 20" or 25" driveshaft. I'm assuming that it is the 25".

I guess this is the long shaft motor. Can anyone tell me what lower unit will interchange? It's a 1988 Force 125 MODEL #1251XBC ? I think?

an 85 hp lower unit long shaft will also work, but the gear ratio is different (lower). I do not know the which yrs are interchangeable. You can look it up by comparing part numbers from 1 year to the next.
