I already know that people are going to tell me to ditch the FORCE and power up. This is my learning motor before I jump into the bigger doggs.

I took my boat out the other day, and it seemed like it's normal powerless self. Then it started to slow down more and more until I eventually turned it off. It smelled funny, and had a-lot of smoke coming from the exhaust. I tried to start it, and eventually did but not without a-lot of effort. I assume vapor lock was preventing it from starting. Once it cooled, started right up and did the same thing.. RUUUUUUuUuUuUuUUuuuuuun.. Just before taking it out of the water, I did a visual check to see if water was coming from the two holes in the back, and I had NOTHING.

I took it out of the water, and it was HOT, hotter than usual. Got it home, let it set a while and it started right up again.
I pulled the lower end off, and my up trim started working? ( It has been not working for a while now ) There was no sealer or washer of any kind sealing the mid section from the low. Is this normal?

Took the prop off, and the bearing cover just below that is trashed. I was missing 2 screws and the 2 that are there. The settings are actually cracked.
Tapped the bearing cover out with a hammer, and the bearing stayed on the shaft. Most of it did, it too was broken. There was water in the casing and little grease. But the metal looks fine, all the teeth are on the gears etc.

I checked the lower end for obstruction of the water way, and couldn't find any.

I took the water pump housing off, and the impeller was crammed in it. I could barely turn it inside that housing. Seems to big, but I don't know if that is normal.

Is it normal for the water pump impeller to be hard to turn inside the housing?

Is it normal to not have a sealant between the mid and lower section?

Should I be looking for another water pump somewhere else?

Is there some sort of after market pump I can use that will just circulate water through the block ?

Can I start the engine with the lower unit off and a hose hooked to the inlet pipe? This method could be used to check for obstruction some where late in the water way.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Joshua

Lots of pics will help.
You can get a new bearing carrier if needed.PIC1
Impeller should be tight and not turn too freely.PIC2
No sealant.
Probably not the pump just an impeller.PIC3
Nothing will work better than the original pump.It would be real hard to hook up something.
Yes use a hose on the inlet pipe.Just be carefull if you pull it loose it's a lot of work to repair.J

Re: Water pump impeller in lower end of Force 50 HP engine.

I got the lower end completely dis-assembled last night, that was interesting they way they put those together.

I can say that I have a few things to replace.
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc2/Force/50 H.P. (1988)/507R8C/parts.html
That is a link to all the parts for my mother lower end etc.

My propeller shaft bearing cage is shot - 76.66 - 817731A 5
Based on what the parts website says, 817731A 5 comes with F141118, F366058, and F141305 . ( Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. )

F141118 - Seal propeller shaft ( Planned on replacing ALL seals anyway )
F366058 - Ball bearing propeller shaft ( This is literally busted and has to be replaced.
F141305 - Seal propeller shaft bearing cage ( Planned on replacing ALL seals anyway)

F2A474266 - BEVEL PINION W/BEARING ( This has a slightly busted gear tooth, and I think I should flat out replace it rather than take a chance. But it costs $107.00!! I am searching for a used lower end that has something else wrong with it.

All the other parts look pretty good as far as I can tell, I think I stopped it's operation in the nick of time. I am troubled by the fact that I never did find the missing part of that broken tooth. But it's possible it came out in one of the many paper towel wipe downs that it received to the get dirty grease out of the housing. There are also grooves in the side of the housing that I was surprised to see there. As stated before, the impeller for the water pump is very tight in the housing. It doesn't show any signs of cracks or anything like that. I am going to order a new impeller anyway just because I don't know where this one came from.

I will be posting pics soon!

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Joshua
