I'm too old and wearing out to be running a tiller control, so I put my trusty Grumman up for sale. I'm looking at a 16 ft. Princecraft with an Evinrude 40HP (1995 vintage). I'm not up on anything that large or that new. Anybody got any input as to what to look for, other than compression readings, water pumping and either taking for a ride or in a test tank with a test prop to work it under a load?

Any insight or input or knowlege of these animals would be appreciated.

When was the fuel tank last cleaned out?
How long since it ran?
Have any fuel lines been replaced?
Check lower unit oil? (look for signs of water)
Batteries? Age......Marine Grade?
Any extra parts
Trailer bearings in good shape?
Check trailer tires for weather crack etc.

I'll add a couple of these to the growing list.

I've never bought a used boat. The Grumman was new in 1984, and the engine was a home brew, so I knew what I was getting.

Thanks

Re: 1995 Evinrude 40HP

I have a new to me 1995 Johnson 40 HP and so far I'm real happy with it. The one thing I don't have and wish I did is power tilt/trim. Out on the lake to lift the motor takes all my energy and strength. Then while your just about dieing from the exertion you have to let go with one hand and reach down and flip a lever to hold it in place. It is getting easier buy I sure wish it had the power t/t feature. Best of luck. Rick.
