I have the engine out, pan off and seal halves out. (1984 3.0 L mercruiser) It's a two piece seal. My ? is can I use a over the counter pan gasket and seal from a auto parts place? Or is there something different about a marine engine seal? Thanks

well, the 3.0 isn't used in cars ( the 2.5L was along time ago ).. but no 2 Piece seals.

You need to get the correct seal you wont find it at a regular auto parts shop, unless they sell marine parts ( through Kellogg Marine or other Sierra Marine Dealer), NAPA can get them as their Marine Parts are Sierra Marine so they should be able to get it for you.

Better yet, buy it from Iboats.com !!!

The rear main seal is a common part used by a bunch of GM motors. Should be able to pick a car in the 68-89 range and get it at any parts store. As for the pan gasket - perrmatex is your friend.

Thanks for the new info. I thought of using just rtv silicone for the gasket but I've never tried that yet for a oil pan. Is there any special tricks to it?

No real trick, just run circles around the bolt holes and then connect the circles.

Only time I use oil pan gaskets is when I can get the rubber type with the steel sleeves - even then I use hi-tack on both sides of the gasket.

I doubt you are going to be able to RTV (only) the pan gasket on as the rear pan seal is pretty thick, something like 1/2" thick. I'd pop the $40-50 and get the marine 1 piece silicone pan gasket, a whole lot better than the $10 4 piece set. Agree about the rear main seal, common auto part, same with the front main seal. If you go the cheap route on the pan gasket, look for one from a 68 ChevyII with the 2.5 4cyl, same thing.

It's all done. Here what I learned. 60's small block & inline 6 cyl Chev two piece rear mains are the same
as 1984 3.0 L 4 cylinder. Should of just ordered the pan from a chevy II like fishrdan said. The marine one from Felpro was nothing more than cork and rubber ends. Thanks for the input everybody.
