There is a cast arrow on the top of the distributor pulley. Set the motor to TDC, and have the arrow point at the punch mark on the flywheel. Make sure the top piston is at TDC, using a screwdriver. It is possible to install the outer flywheel incorrectly.

Re: 74 merc 850 thunderbolt timing

Thanks Chris but which punch mark? I Have 3 vertical punch marks on far right side of flywheel, and a single punch mark in the middle of flywheel. You would think I would get some type of pop, sputter, or backfire and i am getting nothing..............OK at top dead center my arrow will be in line with 3 vertical punch marks, in this setting rotor will be in middle of plug terminals #1 and #3 at idle position on throttle. now when I advance throttle/timing it would be even closer to #3 if not on #3 at top dead center of #1 cylinder? are you still with me???
