How long have brass feeze/casting plugs been around?
My 1979 starcraft has a steel plug out. I bought the boat in the mid 90's and they told me it had a remanufactured motor in it. I pulled the motor it does have a remanufactured tag on it but I can not find any info about the numbers 746553. No other remanufactured info is listed. Could this be a car engine? The motor is a 305 with gm460778 cast on the block.

They're all car engines. If you mean did someone assemble the engine using steel instead of brass freeze plugs? Probably.
What caused the plug to come out?

Re: How long have brass plugs been around?

The bottom freeze plugs are pretty much rusted through. One on the port side behind the motor mount looks like it has been pushed out but I haven't found any damage to the block yet. I am going to put new plugs in and see if I have any leaks.
Are there any good threads on how to run the motor outside of the boat?

They were on my 1975 351w OE equipment in my boat. Yours has either had the freeze plugs replaced with auto plugs, or had a new engine put in.
