1988 Evinrude 140 V4 small rumble whilst turning propeller by hand.

Good Morning,

I have a 1988 Evinrude 140 V4 and have only just noticed a slight small rumble whilst turning the propeller by hand. The propeller spins correctly and the boat is running fine. I was just wondering if I am being slightly paranoid noting that I can feel only a small rumble whilst spinning the prop or is this nothing to be too concerned about at this stage.

Drain the oil and check for metal shards. Could be a bearing or bad gear teeth. Try moving the prop shaft from side to side. If there is any play it could be the bearing. Of course it could be low on oil or the oil is so old it has lost its lubricity. Water in the oil can break the oil down.
