Removal of shift rod

I am trying to unhook the shift rod in order to remove the lower unit -
1978 Johnson 175HP boat motor

Most models have a bellcrank under the carburetors. Loosen the screw that forms the fulcrum of the bellcrank and spead the fingers at the shift rod end to relase the pin that holds the shift rod.

Reaching the screw will be easier if you disconnect the control cables.

There is a nylon bushing in the swivel at the top of the shift rod - try not to lose it.

Do you have a service manual if not its under the bottom carb on the port side you will see a screw that is slotted that you remove to disconnect the upper shift rod you can only access from the port side and you have it in reverse (down) to see it.

remove your engine lower covers for easier access to the screw and rod
will make it much easier to reinstall also
