I recently bought my first boat, a 1967 Starcraft 15' with an Evinrude "Big Twin" 40 hp outboard.
The boat has been sitting since 2003, I pulled the flywheel to change points and condensers, and noticed the top crank seal appears to be leaking out oil.
Should I change this top seal while it is apart ? What is involved in changing it, do I have to split the case? Also I would assume I should probably change the lower crank seal as well?
This is my first boat, I have alot of experience with small engines, but this is the first outboard I have worked on. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Model number on engine is 40853A

Don't split the crankcase for just a seal replacement. You have two choices: Take it to a dealer and let him pull the seal out with his special tool, or dig it out yourself without the tool. I suggest the first. It will take him five minutes, if you have it ready to pull.
