I'm interested in buying a 1987 22" Bayliner Trophy Hardtop with a 140 hp, 4 cyl OMC, (600 hours), 42 gallon fuel tank, 25 gallon water tank, porta-potty, 2 batteries bought in 2008, foul-weather zipper cover, overnight cover needs replace, Exscort aluminum dual-axle trailer (had new bearings put on it in 2005), was professionally winterized and stored inside very winter. The asking price is $4,000.00. This boat for sale is located about 120 mile from me, and I would like to know what would be a good price for it, before I make the trip. Also, I have a posting in the water-skiing forum as to if this boat is capable of pulling someone up on a kneeboard...also for tubing.

Welcome to iboats!

Book value doesn't mean too much when you're talking about a boat that old. NADA, for example puts the value at around $1000 including the trailer, which would be an insult if the boat is in decent condition, IMO. That is for a 21' 2160 Cuddy); there doesn't appear to have been a 22'. I believe the original Escort trailer would be galvanized, not aluminum. Perhaps the current owner doesn't really know exactly what he has.

The most important aspect is the condition of the boat. Bayliners (Trophy was a Bayliner model up until 2001 or so) of that vintage are notorious for rot- sole (aka "deck"), transom, and stringers. Be very careful! Any soft spot indicates a problem. You need to have the boat looked at by someone who knows boats if you don't feel you can evaluate it properly yourself.

You mention knee-boarding and tubing. That boat has a dry weight of 3400#. With a 4 cylinder for power, the ride will be, um, relaxed, but I suppose it's doable.

Thank You! The boat is in excellent condition...the owner bought it in 1989...it looks like it has never been in the water...only towed from the storage to marina....in the pictures, the hull is completely wipe; we know the owner, through a friend...he is having the engine gone over, before we take a serious look at it....was going to offer him 3k...it is the 2160...did they come wtih a Volvo engine? We hear that they are hard to find parts for, should you need them...thanks again

As you noted, they were using OMC drives and engines in '87. OMC died years ago, but most parts are still available. Some marine mechanics refuse to work on them from what I've read, though. But the current owner has apparently found someone who does.

Good luck!
