Re: 1983 mercury 7.5 no top end!!!
I just bought a boat off of an uncle. it barely got used for the many years that he had it. It likes to flood, but the bigger problem is i cant get any rpms in forward even when im the only one in the boat. Has anyone had the same problem??? can you help?
First thing to check is that both cylinders are firing. I just went through this with an Evinrude. No guts. Ended up the bottom cylinder was not firing due to a bad condenser. New condenser and she runs like a stripe-butted monkey now. You'd think if a cylinder was not firing it'd miss or run rough, not the case. My evinrude ran smooth as silk, but was gutless.
I just fired up my new to me 1969-1970 7.5 Merc. I bought it and a 12' Gamefisher fiberglass boat for $175.00. The motor looked really new under the shell. Had almost zero carbon inside the lower unit. I rebuilt the bottom end and put a new water pump in it. Rebuilt the fuel pump and carb. Parts were about $110.00 for all I did so far. I put it in the tank this morning hooked up the gas tank, sprayed a touch of mix in the carb, set the choke and she fired up on the first pull. Runs like a sewing machine. Now to fix the boat.
