was trying to get rough idea about motor, was on a police boat 17ft lone star ,
both were given to me ,motor seems to run good last ran in 2005 ,and it started right up!

serial is 2740185 would like figure out year and if its a good running motor !
Mercury thunderbolt 500 50hp!

That Motor according to your serial number was built in 1970.Good Motor but finding parts for it are getting harder and harder to find.The good news is that these motors have alot interchangeable parts with different models.Ebay is a good place to find parts if needed. Happy Boating:)

Rich: Good motors. Suggest you drop lower unit and have it checked and gear lube changed. Buy a new impeller and install so as to not run hot. You may want to check wiring, it becomes brittle. CDI has a replacement internal wiring harness, if needed. Mercontrol internal wiring may or may not be brittle, don't bother it unless necessary. From my experience with my 1970 Merc 500. Good luck!

Thanks for the info on this motor really appreciate it !it came off a police lone star. 18.9foot. I could not believe it pushed that big of a boat cabin and all !
I put it on my 14ft bayliner trophy to replace the force 50hpthat came on it !
It started first crank putting it water tomorrow afternoon !
