I have a 1965?-ish Sea King 12 foot row boat with no HIN, and I am trying to figure out how big of a motor I can put on it. It is aluminum and has 45 degree braces at the bottom of the transom (factory); and I am running a 9.9 hp motor, but would like to put a 20 horse on it. I am not sure if it can handle the weight of a 20 horse, or the torque. My 1972 evinrude 9.9 is pretty heavy, and I can find out the weight of the 20 horse mercury. Anybody have an answer for me?

My current engine is 60 lbs, the 20hp I want to put on it is 115 lbs.

Jim,

I had a 12' Sears for about 15 years and sold it last year to upgrade to a 14'. The 12' had a max 9.0 HP limit, 2 persons at 150 # or 488 # worth of persons, gear, and engine. See attachment.

I would stick with a 10 hp max for this type of hull and transom strength. I used a 8 hp Nissan and it went 24 mph with just me aboard.

I'll have to do a run with my GPS. I think I am more like 10 or 11 mph. I'll just work on getting a used old trihull or something at the end of the season. Thanks.

Your 12' should move out REALLY nice with a 9.9. A 20 would definitely be too much for it.
