Low compression?

I have , from what I can tell, a 1990 Mercury 75 Hp with a jet unit. I have some work to do on the boat before it's water ready so I cracked the case and just out of curiosity I tried to turn the gear on top of the starter. Good news it turned.... so I grabbed the flywheel to see if I could turn it...... bad news.
It turns quite easily. It also feels/sounds like I may have a broken ring. There is a slight grinding sound/feel. How much is a reasonable price for a powerhead?

Have you considered finding out if there is really anything wrong with the one you have? Turning the flywheel by hand is not a reliable way to learn anything other than whether the engine is siezed.

Re: Low compression?

The local shop charges like $70.00/hour and I make $10.65/hour so I'm trying to find out all I can . It just seems that it should be a little harder to turn over by hand. The scraping sound/feel I fear may be a broken ring.
