I have a 1989 110HP evinrude motor it was a vro but that has been removed. My problem is it cuts out or kicks when its running(im not sure what its called)
I was told it could be something with the fuel. I have replaced the filter and started running a higher octane in it. It seems to have gotten worse at an idle now but better at higher rpms. any ideas will help. Thanks

Re: 1989 110hp Evinrude

Welcome to iboats.

No need for higher octane fuel, 87 ocatane is sufficient.

Spitting back, sounding like a mild backfire, indicates a carb slow speed restricted jet..... something causing is to run lean.

Remove the carb face plate and with the engine running and with that coughing condition existing, stick two fingers into the carb throats, one carb throat at a time. This action will be a manual choke of sorts.

When the probelmatic carb is found, the RPMS should increase a bit and the coughing should stop.
