I have researched how to identify this engine for several days now. I wasn't able to find a tag on the motor anywhere so I now post this information for the experts to decipher. Also, it may be possible that the current motor is a replacement for the original.

ENGINE:::
Volvo Penta
GM V8 (i'm not sure, but GM is cast into almost every part)
Large marking on the end of the block above oil filter : 3951511
Intake Manifold marking: 346250
Firing Order: 18436572 (also a GM firing order)

DRIVE:::
Volvo Penta
PN: 850678 8419
Serial: 656871

Hopefully, somebody can shed some light on this mystery. If you think picutes will help, let me know what you want a picture of and I'll post it on here.

Thanks,
Michael

Ayuh,... Pictures Never hurt a thing,... Just post 'em 480x640....

At this point I can tell you it's a SBC,... Either a 305 or a 350 Chevy...

Welcome Aboard Mike,...:)

Haha. Now that I take a second look, it looks like someone dropped an 350 SBC in it. It has a modern HEI distributor and a modern Edelbrock 4 barrel carb. Is this a common thing to do with old Penta drives?

Also, if whoever put the SBC in didn't use the marine heads and cams, could this be trouble? I am assuming that these are important for a marine engine. If so, how available are these parts?

Thanks for your help,

Michael

Ayuh,... I just checked the block casting #s,... 3951511
It's a 70 to 80 400cid SBC....
Same motor I bought a couple weeks ago for a Wellcraft Nova project I'm workin' on...

I wouldn't worry about the Heads,...
The HEI distributer is another story though...
Electrical parts MUST be Marine rated,...
'n that Ain't...

Alright. This is good to know. Any suggestions on the a distributor because the case on this one is cracked and the vacuum advance is completely corroded.

Also, does anyone know what model outdrive this is? I was unable to decipher the part number using Volvo's guide.

You can get a Mallory marine distributor from Summit Racing, among other places
