thanks for the help on that issue, maybe you can help further. Problem is eng won't rev past 2800 rpm. Have checked the linkage it moves well past where i get 2800 rpm. In netural it revs fine and in reverse it revs up to 5500 rpm and you can feel it making power. Have done compression it has 175# in both cyl. Along with everything else done any ideas

Re: Fuel problem?????

Has it been like this since you got it or since you installed it on the boat?
What other maintenance have you done on the boat and motor?

You'd expect RPM to be limited in reverse but not in forward...the throttle usually doesn't have as much travel in reverse. Surprised it revs up to 5500. Was the boat in the water when this happened?

Good compression but about spark? Get an inline spark tester (couple bucks at autozone), set the gap for 7/16", clip it to the engine block, attach the plug leads (one at a time) and look for a strong blue spark while cranking. If it can't jump a half-inch gap in the open air without a spark plug, it's not firing in the hole under heat & compression.

When was the carb rebuild?

Are the carb throttles parallel, closed at idle and horizontal (not beyond) at WOT?

read about the dangers of revving your motor with no load on the engine:

Re: Fuel problem?????

To answer questions, motor has been with boat from new. Hers a little history purchased it from cousin, he had on dock for first 5years. Next five years under carport. He never had problems with it.
Boat was in water when it rev to 5500 in reverse, it went right up with no problem.
as far as other maintance, rebuilt carbs, new fuel pump, new fuel line, new fuel filters, new gas tank, drained lower end and refilled with fresh, greased everything, new batteries, as for boat cleaned and waxed, shampoo carpet.
As for carbs they do work in parallel.
as for spark have used spark tester in line where you can watch spark happen while running and by amount of light how strong, looks good.

Re: Fuel problem?????

you didn't say what color the boat is. LOL. ok. I just thought maybe there was some confusion with the cables and the throttle is treating forward like it was reverse.

or, maybe there wasn't a load on the motor when it revved in reverse, and there was a load on it in forward when it couldn't rev up.

slow mode maybe? have you tried it with the temp switch disconnected?

this is a mystery. Timer base advances fully, carbs open all the way. spark on both cylinders. All this in forward *and* reverse.

ok I can't get a mental image of the spark advance linkage on that motor....examine the wires coming off the timer base. Is there any way at all for a chafed wire to arc to ground with the shift lever only in forward? I'm really just guessing now.
