Restoring rubrails/cleats

There has been much discussion regarding how to return these old rubrails to the original look(not faded/chipped) in all of our threads so I thought we could use a thread dedicated to this.

I uncluded cleats in this since my '79 SS has the same yellow material built into the cleats as my rubrail.

Folks have used a variety of methods to do this and I'd like to know what works best before I do any damage to these.

Any ideas/experiences are welcome, as are funny comments and anecdotes;)

HA, I did mine with fine steel wool and a variety of cleaners. Nothing like harsh chemicals like MEK. It came out with a "flat" finish and after using a marine vinyl dressing it did not change, no sheen. My photobucket page has pics if you want to see what I did. I was pleased with the final outcome.

You are facing the problem of the vinyl being surrounded by the chrome. You might remember I complimented your cleats. PM if you want more details.
