HI, Great fourm

I have a 1974 110 9.8 Mercury s/n 3795658
Thunderbolt IV with Stator and Trigger.
Do I have to install a Rectifier to hook up a tach?
What are my options?
Thanks for any help, Am new to this and going nuts with to much data.
I have Selco 1965-89 Repair Manual 1 and 2 cylinder 2-stroke models.

If it's electric start and has the stator it should already have a rectifier. It should have a red wire and two yellows on it. The red is what charges your battery the two yellows are A/C from the stator.

You might be thinking rectifer/regulator with a tach output like everybody talks about on here. Those are used with more powerful charging systems. You're battery will regulate the power for you just fine.

Just hook an outboard motor tach up to one of the yellow wires and it will work. You will probably have to adjust the pulse setting on the back of the tach to get an accurate reading.
