Have you just done any work on the engine? Like a water pump, or replaced a shift cable?

Also engine size would help a little.... 4 cylinders came in many hp...

1996 Merc 4 cyl 2 stroke prop reverse in neutral

Thanks for your rpley, and sorry about not enough details:
yes I had dropped lower unit for water pump (change pump cover impeller and gaskets)
It was a bit had getting lower unit back on and had to wiggle the shifter back and forth a bit in forward to get the shifter rod (correct name) back in to place.
Prop span in neutral before but I don't recall it being in reverse.
Also I not a grinding clunk when shifted from forward to neutral
It is a 40 HP electric

You're alignment is out on the shift-shaft splines... Drop the leg again and put the shifter in neutral. put the leg in a bench and move the shift shaft until you feel it drop into neutral. refit leg....

I am not so sure- in neutral I can turn prop easy, in forward or reverse I can tell I am turning the drive shaft- but with notor running , in neutral, prop runs in reverse
