impellar or waterpump

have a 1990 sunbird corcica with inboard outboard omc cobra 5 ltre engine
- last time i got my boat winterized was told that the waterpump was weak and need a new impellar

my question is
how do you know if to just change the impellar or change the waterpump?

Have you examined the impeller? It's quick to get to so you can see what shape it's in. If it's shredded you'll need the whole kit, impeller and housing.

There are 3 bolts on the back of the outdrive that release the cowling there. Within you'll 3 more bolts on a round shaped housing that is the impeller housing. Take em off and see if the impeller isn't shredded. This is a good first step to finding your problem.

disconnect the hose from the impeller output to thermostat start motor and see how its pumping if thats ok re connect and do the same with the water pump outlet engine on muffs of course
