My 1988 3.0L four cylinder I/O Mercruiser won't crank when the motor gets hot. Runs great all the time, never gets truly hot, but when tubing towards the end of the day it won't crank unless I bang on the starter. I have tested everything in my driveway cold and everything tests out properly.

Thus I am looking to replace the starter.
Local rebuild is $110,
new online $182,
ebay by DB Electrical aftermarket new $55 !!

Thinking of going with ebay but the disclaimer says:
""NEW Mercruiser 3.0 Marine Starter Long-Short Mount 6563
Brand New Aftermarket STARTER FOR MERCRUISER, OMC,
and OTHERS from DB Electrical

Starter - Aftermarket replacement for Delco PG260M Series
1.7 kW, 12 Volt, CW, 11-Tooth Pinion

Comes with mounting bolts -'One long-one short' bolt pattern.
This marine boat starter fits nearly all Mercruiser, Cobra, Yamaha,
and Volva Penta GM 3.0 liter engines.

**This starter will not replace the older large style 10MT Delco starters
with the 'one long-one short' bolt pattern!
Search for our SDR0272 starter to replace the large style 10MT
Delco starters!** ""

Anybody know if this starter will work for me? Anybody use this starter successfully?

Never ever hit an elctric motor, you can damage, crack and dislodge the magnets.

I used one of those on my old 140HP Mercruiser and it works great, much better than the old Delco starter. (SDR0272 is not the right starter for your 3.0, I'm pretty sure)

No :D Not sure....

I thought the 3.0's used one style and the 140's used another, maybe not. I'm guessing it depends on the flywheel size. I bet if you called DB they would know.
